Today, we will have a creativity and improvisation workshop in our entrepreneurship class. This means that our MBA students will be on the stage. This is a unique approach to teach creativity in entrepreneurship domain. What I aimed when I designed this module was to teach some critical approaches in entrepreneurship such as what the risk is, where we should look for creativity, what the improvisation thinking patterns are for our projects as well as our daily lives and how we can get rid of perfectionist mindset in an innovative way. Regular way of teaching these approaches in entrepreneurship classes or in business schools is just showing them on the slides. However, seeing these terms on the slides does not really help us understand what they really mean “on the street” or what their practical implications are for our daily lives.
During my studies in acting last five years, I had the chance to learn these approaches deeply in another world and in a very effective way. Applying these techniques in my work helped me increase my productivity as well as strengthen my innovative approach. I wanted to share my own experience with my students. Therefore, applying these techniques in my entrepreneurship class was inevitable. The technique became successful and received attention from the media as well as was recognized at the 99 Percent conference by Behance Network in New York in 2012.
I was looking for a co-instructor to teach this module last one year. Then I have met Bahar Kerimoğlu in Atölye Craft where I have been taking acting classes lately. In her first class, I was very impressed the way that she was running the workshop. Besides her professional approach, what really impressed me were her sincerity and the effort that she was putting to make students “to be in the class“.
Bahar has a very successful acting background both in Turkey and New York, US. She graduated from the Department of Theatre at Bilkent University with a high distinction and won a merit scholarship from the Ministry of Culture of Turkey. She got her master’s degree in The Actors Studio in New York in 2002. During her studies in New York, she had the chance to work with Elizabeth Kemp, Anne Bogart, and in Siti Company. Later, she joined New Stage Theatre Company in New York and participated several plays in Off Off Broadway for a year. Since 2003, she has been teaching drama classes in Istanbul in her studio as well as in different theatre companies. She also directed Ethan Coen’s “Waiting” for the State Theatre of Ankara, Turkey. With this first directing experience, she won the Critics Association Award for Young Talent.
Bahar Kerimoglu will be with us in our class at 7pm in E4 – 302 which is one of the studios of Performing Arts department at Bilgi University.
